What are Rattan Tables and Chairs?

Rattan tables and chairs are crafted from natural rattan materials, a flexible and fibrous plant known for its eco-friendly properties and close connection to everyday life. This versatile material is used to create a variety of products, including rattan furniture, vases, and picture frames. Through the skilled craftsmanship of artisans, rattan is transformed into unique and beautiful furniture with excellent durability and load-bearing capacities.

Examples of these creations include rattan tables and chairs, rattan cabinets, and rattan baskets.

Advantages of Rattan Furniture

Many people are opting for natural rattan materials over industrial items like wood, felt, and plastic because rattan enhances the living space with a light and eco-friendly touch. Rattan furniture is becoming increasingly popular in modern homes due to several notable advantages:

  • Eco-Friendliness: Rattan furniture contributes to a more elegant and harmonious living environment.
  • Affordability: Rattan products are generally less expensive than those made from natural wood.
  • Versatility: With a wide range of designs, rattan furniture suits various interior decoration styles.
  • Durability: Rattan furniture boasts a long lifespan, often lasting up to ten years.

  • Ease of Movement: Lightweight and easy to move, rattan furniture simplifies home arrangement.
  • Stability: Unlike some materials, rattan does not warp, extending its usability.
  • Customizability: Rattan furniture can be painted without staining, allowing for greater personalization.

Due to these outstanding benefits, rattan furniture is a preferred choice for many homeowners, adding joy and vibrancy to living spaces.

How Rattan Furniture is Crafted at Far Eastern Handicraft JSC

Step 1: Selecting Rattan Material Choosing the right raw material is critical in the production of rattan furniture as it directly impacts product quality. The ideal rattan should not be too young or too old, possessing high flexibility and durability. Artists must thoroughly understand the characteristics of the rattan they work with. Optimal rattan is approximately 5 meters long, straight, round, and free from pests.

Step 2: Initial Processing The outer thorny shell of the rattan is carefully removed to expose its white flesh. Subsequently, the rattan undergoes steam treatment to initiate the initial processing stage.

Step 3: Material Handling Rattan drying is a meticulous process aimed at achieving the desired texture and color. During drying, excessive or insufficient smoke can cause the rattan to turn red. Exposure to rain diminishes its aesthetic appeal, while prolonged sunlight reduces its freshness. Maintaining the right level of moisture is crucial; insufficient moisture leads to colorful skin, while excessive dryness results in reduced softness. Hence, artisans devote significant effort to meticulously dry the rattan.

Step 4: Straightening Rattan Given its natural curves and twists, rattan is straightened using whips and machines to prepare it for further processing.

Step 5: Steam Bending To enhance flexibility, the rattan is steamed, making it easier to shape according to the specific design requirements of different furniture models.

Step 6: Molding Sections of finished chair configurations undergo surface treatment with sandpaper to smooth out imperfections. The rattan pieces are then placed in molds and carefully managed in controlled environments to maintain humidity standards.

Step 7: Constructing the Furniture Frame Using anti-rust stainless steel screws, artisans assemble the parts of rattan furniture frames. Each piece is manually adjusted for the best fit, and the surfaces around screw and nail positions are meticulously treated to enhance the product’s aesthetics.

Step 8: Weaving Tables and chairs are manually woven and tied at joints or decorated based on custom designs. Wet rattan fibers are employed to ensure suppleness during weaving, resulting in delicate patterns once dried.

Step 9: Finishing Following weaving, the furniture undergoes final treatments. Surfaces are sanded to smoothness, any remaining imperfections are addressed, and the pieces are glued, painted, and polished to achieve a glossy finish. After this thorough process, the furniture is carefully packed and prepared for shipment to customers.

This comprehensive process at Far Eastern Handicraft ensures that each piece of rattan furniture meets high standards of craftsmanship, durability, and aesthetic appeal, showcasing the expertise and dedication of Vietnamese artisans.

Tips for Using and Preserving Rattan Furniture

Properly drying in the sun before use is a practical tip for maintaining rattan furniture because sunlight effectively kills bacteria and termites. It’s advisable to expose rattan furniture to sunlight for 1-2 hours before initial use.

Storage in a Dry Environment: Store rattan products in a dry, well-ventilated area.

Protection from Elements: Avoid prolonged exposure of rattan furniture to rainwater or direct sunlight.

Water Avoidance: Prevent water from directly pouring onto rattan furniture products.

Regular Cleaning: Clean rattan furniture at least once a year. Use a vacuum cleaner to remove dirt from crevices. For gentle cleaning, employ a small broom or soft cloth to prevent scratching. Use a soft cloth or rubber sponge with soapy water for overall cleaning, avoiding strong detergents that may harm the surface of the product.

Following these practices will help extend the lifespan and maintain the beauty of your rattan furniture.
